An excipient is an inactive ingredient in a medication — such as a buffer, preservative, stabilizer, or the liquid a drug is dissolved in. It doesn't provide the therapeutic effect but helps the product stay stable, mix properly, and inject comfortably. Brand-name and compounded GLP-1s can differ in which excipients they use.

What an excipient is

Every medication is more than its active drug. An excipient is any of the inactive ingredients that go in alongside it — buffers that hold the right acidity, preservatives that keep a multi-use vial safe, stabilizers that protect the molecule, and the liquid the drug is dissolved in. None of them treat anything on their own; their job is to make the product stable, mixable, and comfortable to use.

If the active ingredient is the part that does the work, excipients are the supporting cast that gets it safely into the vial and into you.

Why it matters on a GLP-1

For most people, excipients are invisible — until you’re comparing products. Brand-name GLP-1s have a single, fixed formulation reviewed by regulators. Compounded versions, made by a compounding pharmacy, can use different inactive ingredients or concentrations, and some ship as a powder that needs reconstitution before use.
