What is the Wegovy pill?
The Wegovy pill is a once-daily tablet of oral semaglutide — the same molecule as the Wegovy pen, in a swallowable form approved for chronic weight management. It’s the first GLP-1 pill to carry a weight-loss label, and it exists for one simple reason: a lot of people who would benefit from semaglutide don’t want a weekly injection.
The dose is the headline detail. Because only a tiny fraction of a swallowed peptide survives digestion, the pill is dosed much higher than the injection — 25 mg daily — to deliver a comparable effect.
How well does the oral version work?
In its trial program, the 25 mg pill produced weight loss roughly in line with the weekly pen — meaningful double-digit percentages of body weight over the better part of a year. The practical read: the two are close enough on results that the choice comes down to which format you’ll actually stick with.
Two caveats carry over from the mechanism. Results build over months, not weeks, and — like every drug in this class — they last as long as treatment does. Stop, and appetite and most of the weight return.
The Wegovy pill vs the injection
| Wegovy pill | Wegovy pen | |
|---|---|---|
| Form | Daily tablet | Weekly injection |
| Dose | 25 mg oral | Up to 2.4 mg subcutaneous |
| Routine | Empty stomach, 30-min wait | Any time, with or without food |
| Track record | New | Years of real-world data |
| Needles | None | Yes |
Neither is “better” across the board. The pen is simpler day-to-day (once a week, no food rules) and better-proven; the pill wins for anyone who won’t inject.
Dosing and how to take it
The administration rules are the same strict routine that governs all oral semaglutide: take it first thing in the morning on an empty stomach, with no more than about 4 oz of plain water, then wait roughly 30 minutes before eating, drinking anything else, or taking other medications. Miss that window and absorption drops.
Like the injection, the pill is titrated up over time to let your gut adjust and to limit nausea, rather than started at the full 25 mg.
How to get the Wegovy pill
It’s prescription-only, through the same routes as the pen — your own doctor or a telehealth provider — and subject to the same coverage reality: insurers that balk at semaglutide for weight loss will balk at the pill too. If cost is the obstacle, our Wegovy cost guide walks through savings options, and the broader cheapest-GLP-1 rundown compares every route. For the full drug picture, see the complete Wegovy guide.
