What thermogenesis is
Thermogenesis literally means “heat production.” Your body is always generating heat, and making that heat costs energy — calories. It comes from several sources: your baseline metabolism keeping cells running, the energy used to digest and process food, the heat of physical activity, and extra heat produced in response to cold. Added up, thermogenesis is a big part of your total daily energy expenditure — the “calories out” side of energy balance.
Some of this heat is generated by specialized brown fat, one of the reasons adipose tissue is considered metabolically active rather than inert. Muscle contributes too, which is part of why maintaining lean body mass matters for metabolism.

GLP-1 medications work through a different lever entirely: they mostly reduce how much you eat, rather than turning up heat production. It’s also worth knowing that as you lose weight, the body tends to lower its energy expenditure — a defense connected to set point weight. That downshift is one reason weight loss often slows the longer it continues.

Thermogenesis is a normal background process, not a dial you can force higher for quick results.
