What “mechanism of action” means
A drug’s mechanism of action — often shortened to MOA — is the specific biological pathway by which it produces its effect. It answers the question “what does this molecule actually do once it’s in you?” Not the symptom it treats, but the step-by-step machinery: which receptor it binds, which signal it switches on or off, and how that cascades into the result you notice. Two drugs can treat the same condition through entirely different mechanisms.
Why it matters if you’re on a GLP-1
Understanding the mechanism is what turns “it helps with weight” into something that makes sense. GLP-1 medications work by acting as receptor agonists: they mimic the natural GLP-1 hormone and switch on the same receptors it uses. That does several things at once — it prompts the pancreas to release insulin when blood sugar is high, slows how fast the stomach empties, and sends fullness signals to the brain. What to keep in mind
Mechanism explains both the wanted and the unwanted effects. The same slowed stomach emptying that helps you feel full longer is also why nausea is one of the most common early complaints. And mechanism is only half the story: how much drug reaches you and how long it lasts is pharmacokinetics, a separate piece. Knowing the mechanism won’t replace your prescriber’s guidance, but it makes their explanations — and your own experience — a lot easier to follow.
