For GLP-1 medications, the mechanism is mimicking the GLP-1 hormone: activating its receptors to prompt insulin, slow stomach emptying, and signal fullness to the brain, which together curb appetite.

What “mechanism of action” means

A drug’s mechanism of action — often shortened to MOA — is the specific biological pathway by which it produces its effect. It answers the question “what does this molecule actually do once it’s in you?” Not the symptom it treats, but the step-by-step machinery: which receptor it binds, which signal it switches on or off, and how that cascades into the result you notice.
