Body recomposition

Also called: recomp

By GLP Index editorial Updated July 17, 2026

Body recomposition ("recomp") means simultaneously losing fat and gaining or keeping muscle, changing your body composition rather than just your weight. It matters on GLP-1 medications because rapid weight loss can strip muscle along with fat — so pairing the medication with enough protein and resistance training helps keep the loss coming mostly from fat.

What recomposition means

Body recomposition is the goal of changing what your weight is made of rather than simply how much you weigh. Instead of chasing a lower number, you’re lowering body fat while holding onto — or adding — lean muscle. Because a pound of muscle and a pound of fat weigh the same, a successful recomp can leave the scale nearly unchanged while your shape, measurements, and strength all move in the right direction.

Why it’s a big deal on GLP-1s

Rapid weight loss of any kind — GLP-1s included — tends to come partly from lean mass, not just fat. That’s the concern behind headlines about muscle loss on these medications. The countermeasure is well established: eat enough protein and do regular resistance training while you lose. Do that, and a larger share of the loss comes from fat, which protects your metabolism and makes the results more durable.

Two tools make this concrete: the lean body mass calculator estimates how much of your weight is muscle, and the protein calculator sets a daily target to help preserve it. Recomp is the reason “just lose weight” is the wrong goal — what you lose matters as much as how much.

Frequently asked

Does body recomposition show up on the scale?
Often not much. Because muscle and fat weigh the same per pound but take up different space, you can lose fat and gain muscle while your weight stays flat. Measurements, photos, and how clothes fit track recomp better than the scale.
Why does body recomposition matter on a GLP-1?
Fast weight loss tends to include muscle, not just fat. Protecting muscle with adequate protein and resistance training keeps more of the loss coming from fat, which is better for metabolism, strength, and keeping the weight off.
